From a mono-culture grove to a permaculture forest.

On most farms, olive groves are planted in mono-crop fields. At Novilunia, we are committed to researching and cultivating our olive trees in relationship with other diverse plants chosen carefully to create thriving plant communities. Approaching olive tree cultivation with a focus on complementary natural relationships leads to healthier soil and more resilient ecosystems.

Permaculture is an agricultural system that seeks to integrate human activity with natural surroundings so as to create highly efficient self-sustaining ecosystem. It is the concept of utilizing land, resources, people and the environment in a manner that doesn't produce any waste, and encourages the use of closed loop systems seen in nature.

Bio-dynamic Systems

Plants are like humans; to thrive they need vibrant environments with diverse offerings, and supportive communities. Some plants are complementary to each other’s unique needs, and other plants are detrimental to certain kinds of neighbors. Along with our visitors, Novilunia researches which combinations of plants thrive best in our environment and how to care for them best as a collective.

Permaculture Principles

Vital to a healthy permaculture system is a progressive approach to ‘waste’. Human waste is naturally full of nutrients that the earth can glean, if it is treated correctly before being used as mulch and fertilizer. Through our compost toilet system, we propel a sustainable cycle of human interaction with our land.
